The medical center has also opened three Primary Care/Immediate Care/ Walk-In Centers around Staten Island and reestablished a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center on the grounds of the hospital. He also facilitated the merger with Staten Island Mental Health Society in early 2019 bringing their robust programs into the hospital’s network and cementing Richmond University Medical Center as Staten Island’s leading provider of behavioral health programs for children, adolescents and adults.

While in this role, Dr. Messina developed growth strategies that included a new Cancer Center, Proton Therapy Center, and programs in robotics, bariatric, and neurosurgery; as well as a new state-of-the-art critical care unit, emergency department, and an ambulatory campus. Inspired by his mother, Dr. Messina also developed the Linda E. Cardinale MS Center, one of the largest and most comprehensive multiple sclerosis centers in the region.
